HISTORY

Since 1892

In 1892 the Voigts brothers first based themselves in Okahandja and centred their business on farming and trade. With a strong farming background, they pioneered many different agricultural sectors in the country over the years. In 1895 they moved the trade and wholesale business to Windhoek.

Their pioneering work included breeding with stud horses, cattle, angora goats, sheep, mules, and ostriches. The outcomes included giving the local market a boost, for example the exportation of karakul wool, and also permanently influencing the domestic local animal populations as we know them today.

Wecke & Voigts Wholesale has withstood the test of time – disheartening droughts, tedious trekking expeditions with up to 700 animals at a time, local and international wars, depression. Despite all their trials, in 1937, they were able to construct a new and improved building in the former Kaiser Street (now Independence Avenue).

Eventually, in 1964, a new building was constructed on the spot of the former Voigts residence. The ground floor became the wholesale department, while the upper floor was kitted out to become the grocery section.

As the business was constantly expanding, the need for a bigger space started to arise. From 1971 to 1973, a shopping centre was constructed. Wecke & Voigts Wholesale was finally based in a spacious, modern and fully air-conditioned shop – a first in Namibia.

In […] Wecke & Voigts Wholesale saw the need for expansion and thus moved to Schinz Street. In 1991, we relocated to Tommie Muller Street in the Northern Industrial Area of Windhoek, where we are still located today.

Wecke & Voigts Wholesale received a new visual identity in 2014 accompanied with extensive interior and exterior renovations. The journey continues with the number one priority to be Namibians’ first choice.
